SUMMER reading challenge 2021

May 28th-august 17, 2021 (82 days)

Challenges for Parents: Parents can meet more than one challenge

1. Support: Give your child books to read! Purchase books for your child or visit your local library. 


2. Model:  Engage in side-by-side reading. "Let's all read for 30 minutes." 

3. Connect:  Find a book about where you will be going on your summer trip to pre-learn. Buy a book ON vacation to read about where you've been.

Challenges for students

try one or try them all! Books can be used to fulfill multiple challenges! 

Books should be within a student's current reading level.

1. olympic awards

GOLD MEDAL- 15 minutes every day (82 days total)

SILVER MEDAL- 15 minutes, about 5 days a week (55-81 days)

BRONZE MEDAL- 15 minutes, about 4 days a week (41-54 days)

2. World series award

Read at least TWO book series of at least 4 books each (8 total books)

Read as many or more words that Mr. Boldt during summer. Keep a list of book titles, authors, and their word counts. We'll compare at the end of the summer!

5. NEW: Book review

Submit a video review of at least 4 books you've read this summer which may be posted on Salem School's Social Media for other students to watch. Each video review should be no more than 30-60 seconds in length. No spoilers! Videos must be submitted to No more than one submission per week. Last day to send reviews: Friday, August 6th.

7. NEW: BOOK CLUB (Rising 6th-8th graders only)

You and 3 to 5 friends form a book club and post questions, comments and feedback on a Google slide presentation about the books you're reading. See Book Club Tracking Sheet for details and directions. BONUS: Students fulfiling this Challenge will be invited to a Book Club Pizza Lunch with Mr. and Mrs. Boldt during lunch in the upstairs Community Center Cafe in the fall.
